Irving, Pierre M.. LIFE AND LETTERS OF WASHINGTON IRVING MEMORIAL EDITION.  New York:  G.P. Putnam's Son's, 1883.  Number 231 (red ink) of 300 Copies.  3 hardbound volumes.

All three vols. have cursive hand written ink inscription.  First book's inscription reads something to the effect of:   "S- - t Todd, 1st Liet, 1st Arty.  May 26 / 83"  [Presumably reads:  "Sebert Todd, 1st Lieutenant, 1st Artillery May 26, 1883].

The U.S. Army's First Artillery was garisoned at Fort Canby (Columbia River now in the modern State of Washington) and in San Franciso in 1883.  [This helps to explain the heavy foxing, and slight damp staining of pages.]

Washington Irving wrote RIP VAN WINKLE and THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW.  This series was compiled by Washington Irving's nephew. Pierre M Irving.
